A metal plaque has been hanging in our toilet for a while now. It reads “and so the adventure begins” and has an inspirational background of forest and open road. Seemingly calling you to the wild. I think it’s tat! I’d always assumed it was talking to the contents of the toilet bowl rather than to me, but then again there’s been a nagging thought…an itch to scratch…a want to get away. Away from the daily grind. Paperwork. School runs. Homework. Surely there must be more to life than this.
I’m also no stranger to a hospital bed, having had some pretty significant health concerns over the years and open heart surgery on two occasions. That’s helped us all realise that life is for living. Make the most of everyday and every opportunity.
So we’ve talked and talked about it, time and again. “Let’s just do it”, “how hard can it be?”, “why wait?” We’ve exchanged ideas, discussed methods and itineraries and decided a timeframe…which has always been a couple of years away.
Then life gave us a little nudge. I was made redundant, so the decision to go was cemented in our minds. It was now just a matter of how fast it could be done. Every month spent in the house would burn money we needed for the road. It’s time to go!
Now, organising our jumble of a life into some kind of order before heading off into the sunset, takes some planning. More than we appreciated. A lot of detail will be covered in other posts but suffice to say…we’ve got more ‘stuff’ in our lives than we first realised.
Life admin on steroids! But it’s also cathartic; freeing yourself from the ties that bind, subscriptions to TV channels we don’t have time to watch and music we don’t have time to listen to. The direct debits for this and that, water, gas, electric, broadband, phone, tax, MOT’s, insurance, prescriptions, parking permits…almost endless.
Although we’ve plenty to clear out, fortunately, we do have a head-start on the road trip requirements. Proud owners of a converted VW T5 Campervan; coupled with a Bailey Pegasus GT70 Caravan; we’ve got a veritable home from home on wheels (8 wheels to be exact). A combined length of 42ft (going to love the hairpins in Italy), home will be where we park it.
Now all we need is a YouTube channel, Website, Facebook page, Twitter handle and Instagram account. A new type of admin; FUN not humdrum! Oh and a funky name that sums us up.
